With Thanksgiving approaching, many of us turn our attention towards what we are thankful for. Family, health, friends and the like typically come to mind first. And yes, we should absolutely be grateful for those things. But how many of us think about being thankful for our jobs (especially if we are not happy with them) or our job search (especially if it has proven to be challenging)?
“Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill
It is particularly important to “mind” your attitude when you are unhappy at work and are struggling with a job search. Attitude plays a key role not only in your level of happiness, but in your success. If you let your stress and unhappiness bring you down, it will show, and will inevitably make your current job harder and hinder your ability to secure a new job.
“The most important thing you will ever wear is your attitude.” – Jeff Moore
We have all heard it before: “Have an attitude of gratitude.” It has been proven that those who keep a gratitude journal achieve a higher level of contentment than those who don’t. It matters not so much what you have or do not have, but how you perceive your situation.
“It’s a funny thing about life, once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.” – Germany Kent
Things you might be grateful for when you hate your job and are frustrated in your job search:
- You have a job, and therefore income (many do not).
- You have benefits.
- You have a supportive boss or a co-worker.
- You have gained valuable experience that will propel you in future endeavors.
- You have access to LinkedIn and many other resources that make it easier than ever to conduct a job search and grow your network.
- You have access to numerous professionals who can help you market yourself, direct your job search and boost your self-esteem – use them.
There are always things to be thankful for because let’s face it, yes, things could always be worse. Try to focus on the positive. Think about – or better yet, write down – at least 3 things every night that you are grateful for.
“What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it. Every opportunity has a difficult, and every difficulty has an opportunity.” – J. Sidlow Baxter
